About Dr. Jacob

Dr. Jacob Ambrose is a licensed psychologist in San Diego and the Founder and Clinical Director of Restore Psychology. He provides therapy for adults who are navigating ADHD, anxiety, chronic overthinking, relationship patterns, attachment concerns, identity development, burnout, depression, low self-esteem, anger, and multicultural stress.

Many of Dr. Ambrose’s clients are thoughtful, high-functioning, and deeply self-aware people who may look capable on the outside while feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or misunderstood internally. They often come to therapy because they are tired of repeating the same emotional, relational, or behavioral patterns and want to understand themselves at a deeper level.

Dr. Ambrose’s therapy style is warm, collaborative, insight-oriented, and direct. He helps clients identify the deeper psychological patterns shaping their relationships, emotions, motivation, self-worth, and sense of identity. His work is especially helpful for people who want more than symptom management and are looking for therapy that helps them build lasting self-understanding, emotional regulation, and meaningful change.

As a San Diego therapist, Dr. Ambrose frequently works with clients experiencing:

• ADHD and neurodivergence
• anxiety and chronic overthinking
• high-functioning stress and burnout
• relationship and attachment patterns
• depression and low motivation
• identity development and personal growth
• multicultural stress and navigating predominantly White spaces
• emotional regulation and anger
• self-esteem and self-worth concerns

Dr. Ambrose has a particular passion for working with ADHD and neurodivergent adults, especially individuals who have felt misunderstood, mislabeled, or reduced to their difficulties rather than recognized for the depth, creativity, intensity, and intelligence they bring to the world. His work often helps clients better understand their nervous system, motivation, emotional reactions, executive functioning challenges, and patterns of avoidance or overthinking.

He also works closely with clients who struggle in relationships, including those navigating anxious attachment, avoidant attachment, fear of rejection, people-pleasing, emotional shutdown, conflict avoidance, or repeated relationship dynamics that leave them feeling unseen or disconnected. In therapy, Dr. Ambrose helps clients make sense of these patterns with compassion while also helping them build new ways of relating to themselves and others.

As a Black male psychologist, Dr. Ambrose also understands the importance of culturally responsive therapy. He has intentionally worked with individuals from historically marginalized communities and clients navigating the emotional impact of living, studying, or working in predominantly White spaces. He strives to create a therapy environment where clients can explore identity, belonging, pressure, visibility, and self-protection without having to overexplain their lived experience.

Dr. Ambrose sees therapy as a collaborative process of discovery, insight, and corrective emotional experience. Rather than simply focusing on what is “wrong,” he helps clients understand why certain patterns developed, how those patterns once served them, and what it would take to build something healthier. His goal is to help clients move toward greater clarity, self-trust, emotional freedom, and a more grounded sense of self.

Professional Background

Dr. Ambrose earned his PhD in clinical psychology and is licensed to practice psychology in California. As the Founder and Clinical Director of Restore Psychology, he oversees the clinical direction of the practice and works closely with a team of clinicians providing therapy, psychological testing, and mental health services in San Diego and throughout California.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Ambrose is passionate about making psychological concepts accessible to the public. He regularly creates educational content on ADHD, attachment, emotional regulation, anxiety, relationships, self-understanding, and the neuroscience of behavior. He is also currently writing a book focused on helping people better understand the nervous system, emotional patterns, and the deeper psychological forces that shape everyday life.

Dr. Ambrose’s work often bridges clinical psychology, neuroscience, attachment theory, identity development, and practical self-understanding. Whether through therapy, supervision, writing, or public education, his goal is to help people feel less confused by their inner world and more empowered to create meaningful change.
